Vicki Mattern, editor of The Herb Companion magazine, has worked in horticultural publishing for more than 25 years. She has devoted her entire work life to communicating her enthusiasm for plants, gardening and nature with others, teaching and encouraging a sustainable approach that is also practical and fun.
Before joining The Herb Companion in 2007, Vicki served as creative director for Marilyn Black and Associates, a direct marketing agency that represents green garden brands, including Gardens Alive, Breck’s Bulbs and Gurney’s. Her editorial experience includes 15 years with Rodale Inc., where she was managing editor of Organic Gardening magazine. She also was publications manager for the American Public Gardens Association, and was editor of their magazine journal The Public Garden.
Vicki has edited or co-authored seven books on gardening and has been a frequent contributor to many magazines, including Mother Earth News, Better Homes & Gardens publications and Backyard Living. She has appeared on National Public Radio and on television’s The Plant Doctor, Home Matters and Good Morning New York. A long-time member of the Garden Writers Association, she served as a judge for the 2006 Quill & Trowel Awards, magazine category.
She lives and works from her home in eastern Pennsylvania, about 50 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York City.
