For most preparations, it is necessary to grind hard peppercorns and berries before using. Cooks from many culinary traditions toast the seeds and peppercorns over low heat before grinding to enhance the flavor. To ensure the best flavor, turn the spice mixture as it heats and don’t let it burn. Salt also enhances the flavor of spice blends.
