When bringing showy, vivacious peonies inside, be sure to remove their hitchhiking pals: ants. No need for pesticides—just brush the ants from buds and let them bloom indoors. Or, if you snip flowers already in bloom, dislodge the stowaways with a swish in a bucket or sinkful of water. Place in a vase of tepid water and cheer springtime—sans ants and chemicals.

I love peonies and it's good to point out that you can enjoy peonies indoors without ants. When you can see the color sort of showing through the buds, when the buds are marshmallow soft - that's the best time to cut them for indoor flowers. Easy to get off the ants by just swishing them on a bucket of water. This is what we do at the Peony Farm and on my own peony garden!
