About Herbs for Health Resveratrol

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring and uncommonly powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants, in recent years, have been discovered to be of significant help in maintaining overall health and wellness. They work by removing free radicals, which are dangerous and potentially harmful by-products of our bodies’ use of oxygen. Health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and more are thought to be prevented or improved with the use of antioxidants.

Resveratrol is also a phytoalexin, or a chemical found in plants that acts as a defense against harmful invaders such as bacteria or fungi. Phytoalexins, when released, act as toxins to the attacking organism and work to both neutralize invasive cells and prevent their reproduction. Resveratrol, in scientific studies, appears to exhibit these capabilities when used as a health and nutritional supplement as well.

Where is Resveratrol found?

Although Resveratrol is produced naturally by several plant species such as mulberry, peanuts and red grapes, Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) is the preferred source for extraction by herbalist professionals. Due to the high concentration of Resveratrol in the root as well as the great abundance of the plant in its native Japan, Japanese knotweed is both a more potent and reliable source of the chemical than the red grape skin, another popular source.

What does Resveratrol do?

Resveratrol is thought to promote positive effects in users by increasing antioxidant activity and supporting healthy blood vessels. When the body’s cell pathways are functioning well it promotes normal cell growth.

Resveratrol has also been discovered, in both in vitro and animal studies, to show promising activity in all three major stages of cancer progression: initiation, promotion and progression. Despite there being no human cancer clinical trials to date that us Resveratrol, in vitro and animal studies show tremendous promise of the use of Resveratrol in nourishing a healthy immune and inflammatory response.

Adverse Effects

While the health effects of Resveratrol appear to be significant, including as a chemopreventive agent, one study has theorized that it may induce breast cancer. This was theorized in part because the chemical structure of Resveratrol is similar to that of a phytoestrogen. However, many studies demonstrate that Resveratrol may be of benefit for breast cancer. This information is inconclusive. In a dose escalation study in humans, Resveratrol did not cause any adverse reactions.
