A new study by Dr. Boris Stuck from the University Hospital in Mannheim, Germany suggests that sweet smells by the side of your bed can directly affect the type of dream you have.

Using two different aromas, roses and rotten eggs, scientists tested 15 sleeping subjects in REM, and woke them to ask about their dreams.

The volunteers exposed to the rose aroma, reported positive dream experiences, while those exposed to the rotten eggs aroma, reported the reverse.

The results helped experimenters deduce that  smells are “…able to influence the emotional coloration of a dream,” which could lead to potential treatments for sufferers of nightmares.
